I'd never done one of these before, but this was fun. The weird thing is that I never
even noticed the palm tree until later :-) Ruy Cardozo

This one was tough. I have a problem with directions. I knew it had to be Ca and the
flag outside the building made me think it had to be a public building of some type. I
googled Ca city halls and came up with the tall building.
I had a terrible time with the orientation. Then I could not figure out how the street was
so close to the building because on google maps it seemed further away.
Around here we always give directions by describing "where the red house (or
whatever) used to be", never north or south or even street names. It works if you live
here long enough. Margaret Waterman
N.B. I have trouble with orientation, too. I agree that one of the reasons is that
everything looks too close in the picture. I think it was taken with a telephoto or a
wide- angle lens. Both would distort distances. Q. ,Gen.

Three possibilities when using Fountain Valley, CA as the starting point
(really hope that is the right city)...
I-405N to I-605N to I-5N or...
I-405N to I-710N or...
I-405N to I-110N
Guess it depends on the day of the week, time of day and traffic reports.

A harder one this week but too addictive to ignore - thanks for the 'bonus' clue. It's so
funny that you added the bonus question to make it harder as I don't think I would have
been able to locate the right bilding if it hadn't been for that clue. I found the office
address going to your other website. I did wonder wehterh it would be close enough to
where you live so I'm grateful it was the same freeway. Looking forward to the next
quiz. Rachel Joy

Haha! Yes, this one was easy. I was going to do one a few weeks ago, but just didn't
have the time, I keep checking each time to see if I can sneak one in. ;)
I've driven down through Los Angeles many times over the years and even spent a
week downtown for jury duty selection (Rodney King), I was living in Santa Barbara at
the time and the city of LA put me up at The Biltmore so I came to know that area (at
least by sight) after that week. I knew you and Andy were south west-ish of Los
Angeles but I couldn't recall the exact city (which might have made picking that first
freeway a bit challenging) so I looked through the Forensic Genealogy site and saw
Huntington Beach and...viola. Lean Mangue

No, I don't know where you live. I've visited LA once and was aghast at the maze of
freeways and streets. How people get from Point A to Point B is beyond me!

I've never been to California in my life, but I feel as though I just went on a trip....Well,
this was a really interesting because the child who lives in the last house on the left on
your block should put his football & toy firetruck away in the garage or remove it from
the curb because someone may trip on it and get injured! It's also good to see that the
registration plate on your vehicle is pixelled out, because the blue Chevy Suburban truck
down in the driveway in the last house on the right of your street did not have that
courtesy extended to him/her [CA Reg. 4AZW732]!!!!. Cool Quiz!, I hope I'm right on
the location of the original photograph, it looks like there's been some changes there,
There is a discrepancy between the quiz photo and the Google Earth composite, looks
ike some recent construction or just a depth perception/camera angle difference??? I
needed to get the address of Identifinders, & Yeiser Assocs., see if they were identical,
check to see if the address was a residential or commercial location & plug the address
into Google Earth or Mapquest. I also forgot that you had your very own Wikipedia
page. Robert W. Steinmann Jr.
N.B. That's the last thing I should have done- let a cop have a look over the
neighborhood. I'll tell the neighbor either to get the kid to clean up behind himself
or watch his step or make sure he has his accident insurance up to date. - Q. Gen.

Being that QMG lives in LA area, I immediately recognized the landmark tall white
building as the famous LA City Hall on 312 N. Spring St. The driver of white car is
heading SW on N. Spring St towards this LA City Hall.
I used google maps to compare contest photo to street view map. The photgrapher of
contest photo is believed to be a passenger in a car behind the white car. To take a
photo while driving with green light not a good idea for someone driving at the same
time. A reflection of photgrapher's car can been seen in the mirror. By matching angle
of the two light poles to left bumper of white car: it appears that photgrapher's car is
one lane to left and behind white car before Arcadis St, US !01 freeway overpass and
W. Aliso st. -- in that order.
Getting home via freeways: US101, I-5, I605, I405. Your 9 digit zip+4 ordering
address defaults to the center of the 5 digit geographic zipcode area. near a golf course.
The street address defaults to the actual location and is more precise than using zip+4 in
mapquest or google earth driving directions and/or gps directions. Zip+4 is ordinarily
useful for barcoded mail to facilitate processing of large volumes of mail. The letter
carrier has a assigned carrier route which may include one or more zip+4 addresses
depending upon how densely populated the given carrier route is. The mail is sorted in
the order of stops that he or she makes along the given route. Mike Dalton

I found this quiz strange. The first time I looked up Arcadia Street on Google maps I
got a list of cities/towns which didn't include LA proper. Last night I tried again and
got a difference list which sent me first to South Africa (I know the flag was wrong,
but I thought maybe the bldg might be the embassy or something). You mitice I
counced my answer in a lot of maybes and might bes. I knew LA was correct but the
rest sort of nebulous. Milene Rawlinson

This took me a bit longer than last week's quiz. The palm tree and bright sunshine immediately made me think southern California. The US flag suggests the buildings serve a governmental purpose (court house or city hall, etc.). The white lettering on blue street signs is a characteristic of Los Angeles. The street sign in the foreground is badly pixelated, but looks like 'Arcadia Street' Using Photoshop's trick to add resolution to the image, I was able to clearly read the sign and confirm this.
Many of our scientists at work still use Irfanview to manipulate their images. On the Mac an equally excellent app is Apple's "Preview" software. I always use Photoshop because I work with it every day and it has become like a third hand for me.
I created a two-page PDF that explains how to create a fake higher resolution using Photoshop. It is attached here with the LA image that I bumped up to 150ppi. I hope this is clear and helps. I'm assuming you are on a PC, but the process should be the same.
Thanks for the fun quiz.

I think I want to amend my answer to question #2. I think the photographer is facing
more towards the south, not southwest, which would explain why the district court
looks closer to Arcadia Street than it really is. She or he may have been standing near
the park just before Arcadia Street and aiming the lens diagonally across North Spring
Street to get a wide angle shot of the two buildings. This image gives a nice view
towards where the photographer may have been:

Thanks for all the fun.

I tried searching for "Arcadia St", but that didn't help me much. Finally tried "Arcadia St. one way" and found Chinese American Museum at www.camla.org. Seemed natural to try Arcadia St., Los Angeles on Google Earth. Found City Hall fairly quickly, but had to run around several blocks to get the District Court in the right orientation.
