Quiz #266 Results

The picture of the fish is
a red herring (no pun
intended). If you search
on "Finn's Seafood
Restaurant" or "Finn's
Seafood" you will come
up with several hits, none
of which are correct.

When I tried Googling
From VarmintBites.com:

Finn’s Pizza in Homer, Alaska is as good as any
pizza I’ve had outside of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
No, I’ve not had any New Haven pizza, but I’ve
eaten my fare share of others city’s pies.  I’ve had
what purports to be the best pizza in DC, Chicago,
San Francisco and many other cities, and Finn’s
beats all the others.  And frankly, their pizza is as
good as what I’ve had in New York.
varmintbites.com/2008/08/06/best-pizza-in-alaska/
Neither is
the "Woodfire" sign.
"Woodfire".  This usually indicates a pizza place.  Surfing on "Finn's Pizza" you will
come up with the correct answer, Finn's Pizza, Cannery Road Boardwalk, Homer Spit
Road, Homer, AK 99603.

As a check, a partial phone number of the company across the street is visible in the
window in the lower right.  If you can't quite read it, flipping it over horizontally might
help. The numbers "35-7969" can be seen.

Checking out the area code and telephone exchange for Homer, AS is easy.  Just go to
this, the first hit on my list was Finn's Seafood on
Block Island, Rhode Island. This could not be correct
because of the mountains pictured on the sign.
Hence the hint "Rhode Island does not have
mountains like that".  You would also be tipped off by
the fact that Finn's Seafood in RI does not look like
the one in the picture.

A better clue is the sign in the upper right window -
907-235-7969 belongs to Bald Mountain Air Service.

Answer to Quiz #266
August 1, 2010
Yes, the mountains were a clue and obviously eliminated the Rhode Island restaurant
that showed up on the initial search.  A revised search with "finn’s wood fired" [wood
fired from the top window on the right] came up with the Finn's Pizza located on the
Cannery Row Boardwalk on the Homer Spit Road, Homer Alaska 99603...complete
with a photo of the same building.  Since all of the restaurant reviews were very
favorable, I was sure that there had to be an interview with the owners somewhere.
Sure enough.  HomerNews.com interviewed the owners Sasha Raupp & Bjorn Larsen
in 2004. In the article they said that the restaurant is named after their son.

I was thrown off initially by a Finn's on Block Island, Rhode Island, but the photo
didn't line up.  I tried googling the partial phone number (in reverse) on the photo but it
didn't help.  Then I search for "Finn's" "Wood Fired" and found their Myspace page

The photos and info on the VarmintBites blog has got my mouth watering. I wonder if
they'd deliver to Iowa?

As I almost gave up I ran across Finn's Pizza in Homer, AK. It is owned by Sasha
Raupp and Bjorn Larsen and is named after their son "Finn". It was the wood fired sign
in the uppper window that helped me solve this quiz. I had about given up after the past
couple of weeks. I have been to Homer but is was probably before Finn's.

Um, unless I'm very much mistaken Finn's isn't on a street, it's on the boardwalk.
Across the boardwalk is the bay, which likely doesn't have a phone number.

N. B.  I think there is something across the street.  Reflect on my question for a
moment.

I finally figured out this week's puzzle!  After scouring the web for "Finn's Restaurant"
in EVERY western state and province, I finally remembered, um, Alaska.  (Did I
mention I'm a doctoral candidate?  I'm a doctoral candidate--shhhh.)  And yes, please
do put me on the weekly reminder email list; I absolutely love your quizzes and cannot
wait to do more.

The answer to this week's quiz is Finn's Pizza, located on Cannery Road Boardwalk,
Homer Spit Road, Homer, Alaska, which is owned by Sasha Raupp and Bjorn Larsen.
It is named after their son Finn.

I think the sense of accomplishment one gets from sleuthing it out Miss Marple-style
(picking up threads here and there, letting your mind and previous experiences lead you
on to a natural conclusion) is really what is so wonderful about these quizzes.  Thank
you for posting them!

The sign reflected in the window with the blue numerals is for the business across the
road, "Bald Mountain Air Service". I found this by Googling "Finn's" and "Wood Fire",
found articles about "Finn's Pizza", and confirmed the location with Google Street View
(4416 Homer Spit Rd, Homer, Alaska, looking south).

Got there from Googling "finn's wood fire food" 3rd entry was Yelp.com Finn's Pizza
Homer AK.  Googled that and got address as Cannery Road Boardwalk.  Used Street
View and confirmed that was the site. As a check looked for orange sign with
telephone number across street, visible in a reflection.  Googled Finns Pizza Homer
Alaska, found link to Pizzatherapy.com, led to VarmitBites blog that had the answers.  I
didn't use the hint.  This was fun.  The fish skeleton threw me off for a while as I
started looking for Finn's seafood (first hit there Block Island, Rhode Island).  But the
bottom of the sign with Mountains and water made me think Alaska or Seattle type
areas.

I was able to pick out "35-7969" from the reflection in the window.. if we assume it
has the same prefix as other businesses in the area, I would go with 235-7969.. which
would make it Bald Mountain Aviation.... I haven't found an actual address for them but
it does appear they have an office on the spit...

Answers:

1.  Cannery Road Boardwalk, 4287 Homer Spit Road, Homer, AK 99603
2.  Sasha Raupp and Bjorn Larsenuses
3.  Their son, Phineaus

Some of you attempted the second bonus I gave out over email:
What is the phone number of the business across the street?

907-235-7696
Bald Mountain Air Safari and Brown Bear Photo Tours
The fishbones are a red
herring.  The rugged
mountains are not.
The reflection in the window reads 35-7969.
Got there from Googling "finn's wood fire food" 3rd entry
was
Yelp.com Finn's Pizza Homer AK.  Googled that and got
address as Cannery Road Boardwalk.  Used [Google] Street
View and confirmed that was the site. As a check looked for
orange sign with telephone number across street, visible in a
reflection.  Googled Finns Pizza Homer Alaska, found link to
Pizzatherapy.com, led to VarmitBites blog that had the
answers.  I didn't use the hint.  This was fun.  The fish
skeleton threw me off for a while as I started looking for
Finn's seafood (first hit there Block Island, Rhode Island).
But the bottom of the sign with Mountains and water made
me think Alaska or Seattle type areas.

I could see 6 digits of the phone number (35-7969) in the
reflection in the window.  Since I used Google Street View
to verify the location, it was easy to turn around and read the
number off the sign for Bald Mountain Air Service/Brown
Bear Photo Safari as 235-7969.  Finding the area code to be
907 gives the whole number 907-235-7969.

I also checked several other buisiness along the Spit and they
all had 235 prefixes (used VirtualTourist.com).

Just for kicks I tried Googling the partial phone number, but
that didn't work out.  If I added numbers starting at 1 for the
first digit, on the 235-7969, the business shows up on the
first page.  I think I would have jumped on that as a possible
because Alaska fits the Mountains by water on the Finn's
logo.

Thanks again, these are fun.

www.switchboard.com, and surf
on any name - you can try
"Smith".  (I tried searching on
Finn's, but it didn't come up.)

You will find that all the phone
numbers have an area code 907
and an exchange 235.  If you do a
reverse search on Switchboard,
you will find the phone number
