features extensive hiking, biking, scrambling and skiing areas within the region. Two
ski resorts are located in close proximity: Sunshine Village and Ski Norquay.

Banff was first settled in the 1880s, after the transcontinental railway was built through
the Bow Valley. In 1883, three Canadian Pacific Railway workers stumbled upon a
series of natural hot springs on the side of Sulphur Mountain. In 1885, Canada
established a federal reserve of 26 km² around the Cave and Basin hot springs, and
began promoting the area as an international resort and spa as a way to support the new
railway.  In 1887, the reserve area was increased to 673 km² and named "Rocky
Mountain Park." This was the beginning of Canada's National Park system.

When I saw the mountain I thought it had to be Canadian
Rockies, so the town was probably Banff. I saw the town
briefly about 37 years ago and have no clear recollection,
but the lamp-pole banners confirmed my assumption. The
divided street made Banff Ave. the most likely candidate,
and Google Earth Street View put you just down the street
from Athena Pizza and Spaghetti and, of course, the Clock
Tower Village Mall. Jumped through a bunch of those
photos to compare with yours to try to narrow down your
coordinates. I thought about calling you up to ask you to
wave your scarf so I could see where to click to get your
exact location.

Is that from this past week or so? I hope you had a
wonderful time there, whenever it was.

that time. During this period the town was a busy trading center in the "free hanse" of
Northern Scottish burghs, despite not having its own harbour until 1775. The first
recorded Sheriff of Banff was Richard de Strathewan in 1264, and in 1372 Royal Burgh
status was conferred by King Robert II.  By the 15th century Banff was one of three
principal towns exporting salmon to the continent of Europe, along with Aberdeen  and
Montrose.

Banff and Macduff are separated by the valley of the River Deveron. This unpredictable
river was finally tamed by the seven arched bridge completed in 1799 by John
Smeaton. An earlier bridge had been built in 1765, but was swept away in 1768. The
old ferry was brought back into use, until it was lost in a flood in 1773.

The name "Banff" is uncertain but may be derived from the Scottish Gaelic Banbh or
Banbha, a sow, buinne, a stream, or a contraction of Bean-naomh, the holy woman (as
is reflected in the town's coat-of-arms).  Currently, the languages spoken in the town
and in its vicinity tend to be the Doric dialect of Scots, and English.

Lonely Planet  describes the problem this way: “Actually living in Banff is a challenge:
the federal government owns all the land. Only those employed can take up residence
and businesses are obligated to provide accommodations for their employees”. One may
also be squeamish about sharing their residence with bears living in the Canadian
Rockies  and enduring extremely frigid winters.

Question #2 reminded me of some of the lyrics in the
late John Denver's stirring "Rocky Mountain High".
"Now his life is full of wonder
But his heart still knows some fear
Of a simple thing he cannot comprehend.
Why they try to tear the mountains
Down to bring in a couple more
More people, more scars upon the land."

This wasn't too hard because I recognized the town as I have visited there several
times.  When I was little I spent three summer vacations near Jasper with an aunt and
uncle who lived there.  The Canadian Rockies are truly beautiful and worth a visit for
anyone who hasn't been there.

I found a website with a web cam of Banff which is located on the top of the Clock

This puzzle had me going for a moment. I recognized the (backwards) Believe signs
hanging from the posts as being associated with the Vancouver Olympics  (my parents

when I searched Athena Pizza did I get the correct answer (which was an early visual

position where you see me standing in the middle of the street on the median.  When I
did this, I obtained:  51 deg 10' 29.95", 115 deg 34' 16.02".

If you don't have Google Earth, or your computer is too slow to handle the graphics it

address for you is:

There are a couple of good clues to the location of the

on the banners hanging from the street lamps.  Even if
you did not notice this, another important clue is the
Bank of Montreal to the left of the picture.  This would
have at least told you the picture was taken in Canada,
and you could search from there.
