This quiz made me very grateful there are not too many doctors among you.  Here are a
few of the interesting answers we received:

--- Back row fourth from left has Spasmodic Torticollis? It's a condition where the
neck pulls or bends to one side.  (D. Dineen)

--- The older lady in the front row.  If somebody doesn't loosen her corset soon, she
will asphyxiate!  Actually, I have no idea of the real answer, but I look forward to
finding out. P.S. I love your book!  Brava!  (Kathleen Wieland)

--- My quiz answers may not be what you were looking for, but I figure the lady
standing in the middle couldn't last much longer with that strangulation hold from her
girdle. (Dennis Bussey)

--- Lady on left, first row, does not have her left arm.  She also seems small in stature.
(June M. Evans)

--- The lady on the far left in front row has her left arm missing. (Emily Wise)

--- The seated woman on the left. Osteoporosis. (Jerry Cole)

--- The man in the front row, second from left, is in a wheelchair.  It looks as if one
side of his body is paralyzed. (Janet Degalhausen)

--- The young man with the large dark mustache seated next to the older womans left,
seems to have something wrong with his left arm, perhaps there is a cast visible.
A broken wrist or arm?  (Patricia Snyder)

--- The lady on the far left might be blind. Everyone else is looking to their left and she
has her head turned slightly and looking right. (Emily Wise)

--- The older lady sitting down has diabetes and her left leg has been removed from the
knee down. (Kay)

--- The Mom has an obesity problem, but I would guess the daughter on the left might
have a back brace by the way she is sitting. (Betty Halberg)

--- Is the younger one in the early stages of pregnancy? TB? (Betty Halberg)

--- This may sound really sick but I cannot locate the left arm (or the sleeve of her
dress) of the woman in the front row on the left side. (Peggy Rooney)

--- Facing the picture the man sitting on the right appears to be ill with what I would
say is "Gout".  His hands and feet appear to be in an unnatural position. (Jim Hills)

--- The fellow in the back on the left side appears to be missing the fingers on his right
hand. (or are they hidden by a fist?)  Second guess - The lady in the middle back is
being squeezed to death by her girdle. (Dennis Bussey)

THE CORRECT ANSWER
The correct answer was given by quite a few people.  It is that the older woman in the
front row has had a stroke. Note that the right side of her face is sagging. It can also be
argued that her right hand is not gripping the arm of the chair correctly.

Gary Reis is credited with the most persistence. Here are his answers:

--- The woman in the back row looks as if she is wearing the very tight corset or stays
that cause problems with her internal organs and ribs.

--- Second try if I may? Margaret Fitzpatrick had pernicious anemia.

--- My third guess is that the older lady in the front row (probably Mary Hanlon
Fitzpatrick) may have had a stroke. The left side of her mouth is downturned as if her
left side was somewhat paralyzed.

Gary's explanation of how he could refer to the people in the picture by name shows a
lot of good detective work:

"I put Fitzpatrick Family into Google, and found your Fitzpatrick family page with the
picture. I checked out the death certificates that were linked, and found pernicious
anemia for Margaret. It was the only one that seemed if it could have been a long term
chronic
condition.

"I have run across Peter Fitzpatrick before in my search to find my Fitzpatrick
Great-grandfather. I wondered then, and I still wonder, what is a screwsman?"

Besides Gary, the winners of this quiz are:

Audrey Hopper, Lafayette, LA
Suzan O. Farris, Lexington, N.C.
Mary Ann Carter, Mandeville, LA
June Evans, Lacombe, LA
Kathleen Wieland, Ledyard, CT

If any of these winners has not already won a prize, they are entitled to either a free CD
or a 10% discount on the Forensic Genealogy book.

Merle Ann Farrington gets a special nod for answering the quiz correctly, since the
elderly couple are her great grandparents (and my great great grandparents) Peter
Fitzpatrick and Mary Hanlon.  Merle was the one who found the photo in the first
place. The day she received it from one of our long lost relatives, she had it with her
when she went to a doctor's appointment. The doctor immediately noticed Mary
Hanlon's sagging face, and diagnosed her as having had a stroke.

The remaining people in the photo are Peter and Mary's children.  We do not know
which daughter if which, and we don't know which five out of seven of the sons
appear in the picture. (Two are missing.)  The only son we can positively identify is the
man in the back row with the dark moustache. He is Peter and Mary's No. 4 son, my
great grandfather John Fitzpatrick.
