From The website of the Yankee Museum, Belleville, MI, Yankee Flying Classics
http://www.yankeeairmuseum.org/YAFFly.html:

The Yankee Lady, the Yankee Air Museum's B-17G, was purchased and flown to its
new home in July 1986 from Mesa, Arizona. Built at the end of production for this type
at Lockheed's Vega Division in Burbank, California, the aircraft was constructed too
late to be assigned to combat. The meticulous restoration of the Yankee Lady lasted for
9 years and the 'Lady' finally took to the air again in the summer of 1995. This aircraft
now represents a typical combat 'G' model bearing the markings of the 381st
Bombardment Group, 534th Squadron.

The B-17 'Flying Fortress' was first flown in 1943. It was the largest heavy bomber of
its time before and during much of WWII. Production by Boeing, Douglas, and
Lockheed Aircraft Company totaled 12,731. Today approximately 50 survive in
museums worldwide, and fewer than 12 are maintained to flyable status.

The Yankee Lady
The Yankee Lady was produced on 7/16/1945, but it  never saw wartime service. The
"Yankee Lady" is one of 8680 B-17's manufactured near the end of the war, but there is
just one "Yankee Lady". Her serial number is 44-85829 and it is owned by the "Yankee
Air Force," located at Willow Run Airport, Ypsilanti, MI.

For a comprehensive history and chronology of the Yankee Lady, see:

For a list of existing B-17's and other Vintage Aircraft that are still in existence, see the

list includes information on the location of many of the aircraft, with links to sites
containing pictures and text about their histories.

Interesting trivia:  The Yankee Lady was used in the movie Tora Tora Tora!
Personal notes from our readers:

Note about Willow Run Airport. During WWII the Ford Motor Company produced B-24
bombers there. After the war, the government sold Willow Run to the University
of Michigan for $ 1.00 to operate. I attended Michigan after the war on the G.I.Bill.
The University assigned apartments to the veterans at Willow Run. The university bused
us back and forth to Ann Arbor. I soon found housing in Ann Arbor --Yes I know
Willow Run.                 - Bob McKenna

It’s good to hear from and I am glad to see that the Yankee Lady will see some
publicity.  She flies over my house several times each summer and the sound of her
engines is very distinct, so I can hear the lady long before she can be seen.  There is no
other plane in the area that sounds anything like her.         - Dale Niesen

This is located just down the road from my house at the Yankee Air Museum at
Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, MI. I never realized this plane was in "Tora Tora
Tora". Cool! I've seen it go over our house once and it was pretty impressive!
